Virgin and Eyst take the real-time strategy genre into the third dimension…
Virgin Interactive is set to breathe new life into the tired real-time strategy genre with the release of Wartorn for PC systems this July 2000.
Developed by Eyst, the game uses the team's ETTE (Eyst 3D Tactics Engine) to deliver a stunning combat title that drops the player within a truly 3D world. Thus, in addition to moving across the rugged terrain, for the first time in the genre's history, players can now use buildings and landmarks as tactical cover in the heat of battle.
As befits a game that takes the real-time field forward, Wartorn is set in the distant future. The year is 2999 and mankind is set to enter the next Millennium as part of a peaceful society where war is a thing of the past. Instead, civilians use the Wartorn arena games to satisfy any destructive tendencies.
Wartorn is a game of life and death. Huge rewards await those who survive it, but the stakes are high with only the most able teams selected for its death or glory rounds. In July, PC owners can now take part in this deadly form of futuristic entertainment as Wartorn is brought to home systems 1000 years before its inception! Players must prove their worth by passing both intelligence and physical tests, with the mental test deciding the player's role within the game's teams. In Wartorn, however, psychosis is seen as an attribute rather than a handicap - and players displaying truly violent skills will be promoted to Warlord; and captain their squad in the oncoming games!
The actual games take the form of a free-for-all battle to the death. Anything goes as a wealth of weapons come into play as players attempt to guide their team to victory. By selecting team members for special missions, players must think on their feet as they attempt to out-flank their rivals. Similarly, creative use of the landscape and the available hardware is also essential, with Eyst's game showing off its incredible 3D graphics at every opportunity. Also, as the game progresses, players become ever more wealthy as lucrative sponsorship deals are offered, allowing the player to finance ever more ambitious missions.
Wartorn is set to revolutionise the real-time genre. With its 3D graphics and immersive gameplay, it represents the next stage in the genre's evolution and sets a new standard for others to follow. Wartorn may be a sport played under controlled circumstances, but anything goes - and PC owners daring enough to try their luck will be readying themselves for its unveiling in June. It's show time…
